Baking in OTG

If you are looking for OTG baking recipe's, scroll down. some basic questions i usually get from my reader's are shared here to make it useful to all.

Note:

I have been getting lot of questions on what OTG and which capacity to buy. I am just recommending Morphy richards as i have been using it for the past 6 years. Regarding capacity for a small family of 4 go for 18 trs or above. If you are serious in baking go for big capacity like 40 ltrs or more.

What is OTG?

The abbreviation for OTG is Oven Toaster Griller. In layman's point of view, You can bake a cake, toast a bread and also grill a paneer, etc.

What is the difference between Microwave Oven and OTG?

In Microwave oven, cooking is done through heat waves. Its more similar to our Pressure Cooker. There are microwave Oven's with Convection and Grill mode, in which you can bake and grill. so understand, if yours is just a microwave without convection, you cannot bake!!

In OTG, baking is done with the heat of rods. its more like a traditional oven. Whenever i bake a cake in my microwave, the top part of the cake becomes harder. but in OTG, cake turns out as good as in the bakery shops. so in my opinion, there is difference in baking in microwave and in OTG.

What to Buy Microwave oven or OTG?

It depends on your needs. if you are interested only in baking cakes/cookies or making some Grilled Non-veg dish, you can blindly go for OTG's.

But you cannot use the OTG for cooking or re-heating purposes.

What I do with my Microwave is?

I boil milk, re-heat my  rice, sambhar or curry. i steam vegetables in my microwave. My cooking gets over fast, with the use of microwave oven. I also cook my basmati rice in it, as it comes out grains apart.

So, see for what purpose you are going to buy and decide accordingly.

 How to Use OTG?

First Refer the Manual and wait for the demo person to give you the demo.

How to Pre-heat the oven?

Both the Top and Bottom rods HEATED UP/ Toast Mode:

Pre-Heating the oven is must, before you start to put some stuff into the oven. Heating up both the top and bottom rods at certain temperature mentioned in the recipe for about 10 minutes is Pre-heating the oven.

You could use this toast mode(both top and bottom rods heated) for pre-heating the oven and also use the same mode to toast the bread.

Bottom Rods heated up / Bake mode:

If the bottom rods alone heats up, then its the bake mode. cake has to be baked only in this mode!
Be it cakes, cookies, bread, pizza's, anything which calls for baking should be done only in this bake mode.

Grill Mode/ Top rod heats up:

What i do with Grill mode is, after baking cakes, pizza's,bread, cookies anything, i grill them for 2 to 3 mins, to get the crispier/browning effect on the top of cakes.etc.

You can also grill paneer and some non-veg stuffs with the rod, that you would have got.

Why the Cake did'nt rise in bake mode?

* Make sure to use aluminium tin/moulds for baking cake.
* Also line the tin with butter paper or aluminium foil sheet.
* Pre-Heat the oven for 10 min at 180C.
* Bake the cake in bake mode (Bottom rods alone should heat up) for about 35 - 45 mins. at 180C or the temperature specified in the recipe.
* Make sure to place the wire wrack in the middle wrack.

*Cake has to be baked for at least 30-40 mins. cupcakes takes 12-15 mins. so wait for enough time to get it raised and baked.

* If you have used eggs, baking powder, baking soda properly, the cake would definitely rise.

Hope i clarified you as much as i can. if you have further doubts, feel free to mail me at lavraj2k4@gmail.com

Happy Baking!!

  17. Hi,
lovely blog. came searching for info on OTG's and came across yours. and found a treasure here.
I recently purchased an Murphy richards OTG and dunno y, despite preheating it to 180C and baking for 40mts or so a std spong cake, i end up with the bottom part burnt black. if i reduce the time, the cake remains uncooked. i keep only the grill on in the top slot. and the pan on that.
any idea on what I could be doing wrong.

    Thanks

  18. Hi Sangeetha,

    Check with

    * R U Baking in Aluminium bowl thats lined with butter paper or aluminium foil sheet.
    * R U Placing in the middle wrack of the OTG

i guess u would have gone wrong at placing the wire wrack.

anyway iam updating above with pics to give a clear idea.

Thanks and do let me know u r clarified or not...

  19. Hi, so i just bought a new OTG morphy richards 28 and the lower rods don't seem to be heating up. It's a manufacturing defect right?

  20. Hi Lavi,

This post of yours really helped me to learn how to use an oven. I had a couple of failed attamepts at baking and couldnt understand what was wrong, later i learnt from this post that the tray needs to be placed at the centre and now in lower rack.

Now i am on the right track to trying new baking recipies. Its a really lovely site. I have tried the "thenga aricha kuzhambu" from you recipe list and it came out so well. :). Thanks a ton and keep going.

  21. hi

Came across your lovely blog while searching for otg recipes.

God bless you for sharing all minute details a beginner needs to clarify.

I request you to clarify some more doubts please....will you ?

What is that aluminium tray for ? Should it be placed always on the heating rods ?

So while baking cookies/buns are we to use this aluminium tray or a different vessel? If using this aluminium tray for toasting bread, vegetables, pizza, cookies where has to be its position. Sorry so many doubts ....

    Please clarify latha.

    ReplyDelete

  24. Rachel,

i guess you should have a demo first. try choosing different modes and see, if the lower rod lights up or not..

    Thanks a TON Swetha!

    Smile / Latha..

scroll up and see the otg picture and find the wire grill placed in middle wrack. place the aluminium tray over the middle wrack.

    Place always in middle wrack.

Yes for baking cookies. bun's, first line with butter paper or aluminium foil sheet and then place cookie dough and bake.

    Hope you are clarified latha!

  26. hello frnds, I'm a student and I love baking. I recently purchased an OTG which is 10 litres. I read thru the blog an found tat I shud b placing the cake mould in the middle rack, but my problem is tat since the OTG is 10 litres, the cake mould will not fit in wen I keep it in the middle rack. Hence I have to keep it in the bottom rack itself. All the cakes tat I bake get burnt or the surface on top is bulged. Is der any alternative for this??? Can anyone help me??

And also, please let me knw how can I reduce the egg smell in cakes.

    thanks

to avoid egg smell, you have to beat the egg for atleast 5 minutes and use vanilla essence while mixing for cake.

    1. yes sunanda you can use glassware in otg. be carefull while removing from otg, as it will be too hot. also glassware conducts heat fast and baking is done 5 mins earlier when compared to non-stick or aluminium pan.

    1. Hi, first try with a cake!

get a aluminium baking tin or non-stick baking tin or a glass bowl.

whatever bowl you use, grease it with butter and spread butter paper on it. prepare the cake batter as per recipe. pour the batter over bowl.

scroll up for the OTG picture, having wire wrack. place the wire wrack in middle wrack(2). preheat for 10 minutes. in preheating mode (= both the top and bottom rods lighten up) at 180 c for 10 mins.

then change to baking mode(_ bottom rode alone lights up) place the bowl in the the centre of the otg. bake for 35 to 45 mins.

refer the manual before starting up and get a demo for morphy richards.

  47. We just bought an Chroma OTG from Chroma of 28 lts. Noticed that it does not have the function to heat only the bottom rod. It does have the function to heat the top rod with fan, top&bottom rod heating with fan, top&bottom rod heating w/o fan - apart from the rotisserie functions.

  77. Thanks for sharing this, Lavi.. really helped a lot! I recently bought an OTG (had one some 8-9 year back) and this was like a great revision class.. I have a microwave oven too but it just doesn't make the cut that's why had to buy the OTG too.. I have to buy some bakeware now. I was planning to get a round cake pan, a muffin tray and a rectangle baking dish. What do you think are the minimum must haves for baking? Do I need to get something else too? Please suggest :)

    1. Hi Deepa, set the mode to convection mode (top and bottom rod to be heated...always use this mode for pre heating the OTG and always pre heat the OTG before using it)...set the temp to whatever temp that you want to use for the stuff and set the timer for 10 minutes and start. Cheers

  90. Hi Lavi, this blogsite is so wonderful, I do not have enough words to describe. You are a saviour when it comes to explaining the working of OTG. Just one question and one request...
What is meant by broiling in OTG ? and I want to request you if you could give us a list of the OTG settings needed for most commonly (considering a quantity to cook for approx. 4 people) used stuff like (grilling, toasting and baking) Paneer, Fish, Chicken,Cake Muffins Pastries etc. with the mode, temp and timing. I have tried using the recipe book provided but somehow they give time which leaves the stuff raw. I know it maybe a daunting task to provide this list but I will really appreciate it. Thanks. Also my email id is gautam.balsaver@gmail.com.

  93. Hi Lavi,
I have MR OTG, whenever i bake cookies the bottom gets burnt. I use standard temp as mentioned in blogs,
    1. Preheat bake mode (temp as mentioned)
    2. Middle rack and placing black tray comes with OTG after placing alumi foil. Tried placing in top rack too (same result)
Not sure where am going wrong each time, Should I use the black one or aluminium tray? Should i preheat for cookies/not? Pls help me.

    1. Hi,

Its quite common of burning the cookies.
Make sure you place 2 layer of butter paper or foil on black tray and place the cookie dough. also make sure to make the cookie little thicker. also keep your eyes on the otg right from the 10th minute to 12th min.

Yes pre-heating is necessary! do not skip it. make sure the temp is between 170 - 180C.
